Louie's 106, Austin, Texas

A Mediterranean grill with distinctive Austin flair. There is a live piano player, many cozy tables and the owner, Joe, may be sitting at the bar. It has won a number of awards for its formidable wine list.

Presentation:
Simply done in a circular moderately deep ramekin placed on a saucer. Garnished with a sliced strawberry and sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Crust:
The crust is surprisingly hard but not too sweet and no charred taste despite appearing like it might have some.

Custard:
Strong classic vanilla taste. Served room temperature. The density is light but stronger than many of the almost whipped custards. It does tend toward being more liquid on the bottom.

Overall Impression:
The overall potential of this crème brûlée. I think there are significant flaws with both the crust and the custard. Notably that the crust is too hard in places and the inconsistent nature of the custard. However, the flavor is refreshing and particularly enjoyable. It was not particularly unique in any way, but overall I still found it genuinely enjoyable. I am really tempted to rate it higher, but I think with the significant flaws present it must be low. However, I do think that is definitely worth trying out.

Rating:
2/5
